Galatians 6:14 “But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world.” (HCSB)
Paul begins this verse in a strange way, he says, “But as for me.” You see Paul was not interested in being a teacher of things that he knew nothing of for himself. Part of sin and self-righteousness is that we are stuck in the “you, you, you” kind of conversation while we ourselves are forgotten. We are not free from the world’s entanglements because we attend many bible studies and read many bible related books and don’t watch certain kinds of TV and do not drink alcohol and dress a certain way, we are free because of what Jesus did 2000 years ago! No! The gospel of Jesus Christ brings us to be most concerned about our sin and our issues and not to be obsessed about the sins and failures of others. Paul is saying this, “I will only boast about the cross because I am so needy, so sinful, so lacking that I myself have nothing else to boast about but Christ.” He is saying, “You guys can brag about your good deeds and efforts but as for me I have nothing to brag about other than the fact that Jesus died for all my good deeds and efforts.” May we see our need for the cross everyday brothers and sisters, otherwise we will be unable to brag about it and enjoy our cross-rooted bragging rights.
