Revelation 21:19-20 The foundations of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. As we read this list of precious and beautiful jewels in the book of Revelation we may be impressed and interested about the stones which make up the city of heaven but we may miss the sweetness of what is being said here. If you read the 28th chapter of Exodus you will see that these same stones where the stones to be placed on the breast plate of the High Priest of Israel. Now we know that Christ is the true High Priest of God’s people so what does all this mean? What are we to do with this beautiful city of precious stones that we are called to consider in Revelation? First let us say that the beauty of heaven is the love of Christ towards His people. If all the stones in the city are the very stones on the breastplate of Christ our High Priest then all of heaven has been physically designed to display the beauty of Christ’s love to His people. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look we will see stones which represent us and Christ’s deep love for us, that kind of love which swallowed up our wrath and took all of our sins and buried them in the abyss of the cross. Imagine this, beloved brother and sister, that everywhere you walk and everywhere you look you will see things, beautiful things, to remind you of Jesus Christ’s cross love for you! If heaven is a place to see kisses of divine love everywhere you turn what do you think your life on the way to heaven is about? Wouldn’t it be the same? Yes!
But notice something else about these stones in heaven. They are precious and beautiful. If you read this chapter you will see that much of heaven is about the beauty of God’s people. God is memorized with us in heaven so much so that He says we are radiant to His eyes with glory! “But why?” and “But how?” you may ask. Yes!Because in heaven we experience fully what is true already in part, that we are totally in Christ. Christian, you are not something God tolerates, something God is resentful for having, something that is burdensome to Him. Do you realize that these precious and beautiful stones in heaven are representing you and how much God is ravished with your beauty and value? He values and delights in you so much so that He has designed a city full of priceless and marvelous stones which represent how marvelous and precious you are to Him. What is heaven? It is a place where God magnifies and celebrates your value in Christ everywhere! You may say, yes, ok, but that is then, what about now? I do not feel like I represent a precious and beautiful stone in any way. Consider Ephesians 2:6 which says, “Together with Christ Jesus He also raised us up and seated us in the heavens.” (HCSB) What does that mean? It means that God is now already beholding you perfect in Christ. So yes, now, even now in all your sin and failure God is mesmerized with how lovely you are to Him in Christ. These precious stones in heaven are telling you, know that God now beholds you every day of your life as a beautiful priceless stone, a stone which He has placed in His heart on the breastplate of His Son and our Priest. You see this city is a city where we can see now how passionate and awesome God’s gospel love is for us; it is so deep that God has prepared a city which has been designed to show us this love everywhere we walk and everywhere we look, so start looking now.
