Romans 7:4 “Therefore, my brothers, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the crucified body of the Messiah, so that you may belong to another—to Him who was raised from the dead—that we may bear fruit for God.” (HCSB)
What is most interesting about our passage and about life in general is that our habits and behaviors are truly about relations. Part of what it means to be made in the image of God is that relationships are what is most central and defining of our existence. We see here that the way God changes us is firstly by changing our relationship to the law. Our passage says that we were put to death in relation to the law through the crucified body of the Messiah. Meaning that in order for our lives to change our relationship to the law has to end. What? How could this be? In order for me to enjoy God and be changed by His love I have to have no relationship with the law which tells me to do good? Yes! This is because the law can only do one thing which is to tell you what is right and good and that you can and never ever will be able to do it. The law condemns you and makes you rage against God even as you try to keep it because you are trying to conform to an external pressure which is against what your heart desires. So what is God’s answer to you today? Christ obeyed the law and He died under its penalty so that you would have no relationship with it ever again. You are not condemned by its requirements you have failed to keep and you are not called to keep it in order to be right with God. Our path to enjoy God is firstly to say goodbye to the law! We were made to live lives of holiness through loving and enjoying beauty and so Christ comes and rescues us from our slave driver of law so that we can enjoy the beauty of a saving resurrected God-man in deep and unending fellowship. My relationship to standards and requirements are dead. Goodbye to morality and goodbye to instructions to be better because Jesus death did away with my relationship to the law!
Is that it though? My key to enjoying God and being changed is solely about having no relationship to law? No! Our text also says that this happened so that we would belong to Another, Another who was raised from the dead. We do not need law, we need to belong to someone. We do not need instructions, we need to be loved by someone. We do not fundamentally need do’s and dont’s we need intimacy with Someone. God ends our relationship to holy standards so that we could have a loving, intimate relationship of belonging with a resurrected husband. Belonging to Jesus, being loved by Him, having a life of nearness to Him bears the fruits of His love as our passage says! We were made to live lives of holiness through loving and enjoying beauty and so Christ comes and rescues us from our slave driver of law so that we can enjoy the beauty of a saving resurrected God-man in deep and unending fellowship. Forget about changing, forget about being good, forget about measuring up, forget about doing right because your marriage to life under law has ended through Christ's death. Focus on being a property of love by a Christ who bought you with His own blood so that you would live a life rooted in loving and having Him as your own treasure because you are His treasure.
