1 Cor 2:12 “Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God.” (HCSB)
We are all searching for truth and clarity and perspective in life whether we recognize it or not. Consider this beloved of the Lord, the search for truth in a sense is over, God has sent His Holy Spirit to you. You see the Corinthian church was searching for God in the various ways that people try to find their way to Him. It is part of human nature to try to seek and make their way up to God as we are prone to accept a kind of religious pursuit which is independent. But God has sent us His Spirit to inhabit us that we me know of Him. God does not send you on a journey, He comes to you Himself and makes a home in your very soul! God does not communicate truth to us in books, He communicates to us in love, in an intimate relationship, He communicates to us by sending His Spirit! He does not say look for me and find me with your most logical and rational attempts, He says, “I am here already so that you may know me in love.” God does not want us to merely know things and know facts; no He wants us to know and love Him as a person and that is why He reveals Himself to His through the person of the Holy Spirit living in us and not in any other way. The beauty of the gospel is that God comes to us in love by grace not that we come to Him through human wisdom and intelligence. In the gospel God does more than give us truth and information about reality, He gives us Himself as the lover of our souls in wonderful fellowship. We understand things by the intimate presence of the Spirit!
Notice what else is precious about the way God reveals truth to us, the text says that the Spirit comes to give us understanding about what has been freely given to us by God. He comes as a bearer of gifts of grace! The Spirit does not come as some sort of internal law giver or some sort of supernatural list giver, He comes to tell us things that have been given to us freely! He is a messenger of grace! He does not come to primarily tell you what you do not have and what you are not but to tell you of the riches that you have in Christ and to tell you of who you are in Christ! Beloved, let us see Christianity not merely as a bunch of facts and truths dumped down to us in a book but let us see it as a relationship of love and intimacy where God by His Spirit reveals things to us in our hearts by making us His eternal home! He comes to tell you over and over and over that you have all that you need in Christ and that all that you need in Christ is freely given to you all of grace! He gives knowledge of such wonderful things freely, brothers and sisters! Freely! Not by works, not by human intelligence, not by merits, not by religious striving, not by self-effort, but He gives things freely as is consistent with the gospel of grace. God comes to reveal truth to us in an intimate love relationship where He shares all of Himself to you! All other relationships are about giving to receive something in return but God comes in the person of the Holy Spirit to simply give, give, give! We often come to God thinking that we are to understand and have an intimate knowledge of Him as we give but we see here clearly that we receive things freely! Beloved children of God, let us see Christianity and the truths it contains as precious love gifts reminding us about what we have in Christ and let us not see it as a religion which is obsessed about what we do not have and what we do not do and what we must ourselves attain. Beloved, let us see Christianity not merely as a bunch of facts and truths dumped down to us in a book but let us see it as a relationship of love and intimacy where God by His Spirit reveals things to us in our hearts by making us His eternal home!
