Proverbs 10:22 “The Lord’s blessing enriches, and struggle adds nothing to it.” (HCSB)
The first part of this verse is simple yet profound in how it summarizes Christianity. God is the source of all good because He is goodness itself and since that is the case it is His blessings which enriches. Notice that it says that His blessing enriches and not his instructions. There are some of us that think that blessing is a matter of getting some instructions and guidelines from God and nothing more. Blessing is simply a matter of having blessed instructions given and just putting in your best effort. No! It is the Lord’s blessing itself which enriches us not the blessing of having ways to self-enrichment. You may say, “Ok, I see that it is the Lord’s blessing which enriches me, but what blessing is He talking about?” Ephesians 1 tells us that God is blessed because He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Meaning that the Lord’s blessing in its truest sense is what we have in Christ because of Him. What is the Lord’s blessing? Christ!
Not only is it the Lord’s blessing which enriches us but God’s blessing truly enriches. We often think that we get to enjoy the blessing of Christ in the same way that people enjoy a two minute trailer to a movie. No! The Lord’s blessing of Christ which Christianity is not a life of human struggling to bring down and unlock God’s blessing but it is a life of receiving and laying hold of God’s enriching blessings.enriches us does not give us a two minute sample or appetizer! You have been given eternal life in Christ, not partial life! You have been given the perfect righteousness of Christ apart from anything in you not some portion of Christ’s righteousness! You have been given boldness and access to God, the Father, in Christ as a child not a two minute weekly appointment! You have been given the fullness of Christ saving, forgiving death not parole or probation! You have been given freedom from the power of sin to master you in Christ, not a little more help to free yourself! You have been given the love of Christ in your very heart to enjoy and share, not human love! You have been given the privilege of being made the place where God now lives and dwells by the Holy Spirit not merely given God to walk in front of you or around you! The Lord’s blessing enriches because it gives us Christ who is indeed rich! Because it is God’s blessing not ours we are enriched! Stop acting and living like a poor cursed person and begin to realize how rich you are in Christ!
Notice the final part of our verse, struggle adds nothing to it. How do we often think that God does not bless us because He is good and kind but because we struggle? How often do we think that we need to provoke and convince God to bless us, to enrich us? How often do we feel that God’s blessing of Christ is not enough and that if we really want God to do us good we must be anxious and work and do? Christian, does God blessing in Christ enrich? Then realize that human struggle adds nothing to it. Realize that how good you are, nice you are, or how many extra spiritual rules you make up and keep will not add anything to God’s blessing, the Lord’s blessing enriches and struggle adds nothing to it. Nothing! Nothing! Not the Lord’s blessing enriches and struggle adds a little but nothing! Christianity is not a life of human struggling to bring down and unlock God’s blessing but it is a life of receiving and laying hold of God’s enriching blessings. Because the gospel has given us Christ we have all things in a Christ who is all, we have Him.
